As many in the office may know, I love illustration and discovering new artists to inspire my own work. Working in a graphic design firm doesn’t mean that we exclusively surround ourselves with strictly design-related things, as much as I love admiring a beautifully crafted logo or word mark. So I figure I could start off by showcasing and sharing a few of my favourite illustrators which some of you may know or may not know. It isn’t about finding the newest, most obscure artists, it’s just about sharing great work that duly deserves more admired. Without further ado, I am proud to start off my favourite illustrator picks with ..Mikkel Sommer!

I first found out about Mikkel through a few blogs way back but I was pleasantly surprised to find out he produced comics through Nobrow. I was lucky enough to snag his comics in Portland (I’m sure you can get them here as well) and I was extremely lucky to get one of his prints and a quick doodle done for me as a present from my girlfriend (it was a drawing of MF Doom, Shy Guy, and Link joy riding! Too awesome not to share).

His style is a brilliant balance of raw line work and tight colouring that makes all of his drawings a pleasure to stare at for a long time. All in all, a stand up guy with a great style to boot and a large volume of work. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for more of his work in the future.

Check out more work on his website or follow his blog.

Successful first illustrator pick!
